He was about 15 when he used to wake up at 4:00 a.m. to meet his friend Frank at the farmworker employment center in downtown Stockton, CA. He remembers working alongside whole families of farmworkers who didn't speak English. Darrell has always loved fruit. He said that he would not mind picking fruit if he could have made a living from it, but it never made him a liveable wage. Ceasar Chavez was one of Darrell's heroes. Ceasar was the Co-founder of United Farm Workers (UFW) labor union (1962). He established union contracts for farmworkers requiring minimum wages, clean drinking water, periods of rest, health benefits, handwashing stations, and protective clothing against pesticides. He won the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1994).
