In this article, I’m going to show you how to get more traffic to your website using affiliate marketing.
I’ll show you my proven affiliate marketing formula that you can implement straight into your business to generate more SALES 24/7.
You’ll also see me walk through examples and show you how one affiliate link increased sales for £46k in under 12 months.
Let’s dive right in…
It’s no secret that sales is the most important metric for any business.
In this section I’m going to show you why affiliate marketing should be in every online buisnesses stratgey.
Bottom line? If you want more sales affiliate marketing is a must.
Well, that is simple:
They want to know how to make more money sales.
When I speak with business owners I ask them what do you most need help with?
And the answers I get all tend to be very similar:
“How can I make more profit and generate more sales?”
However, the real reason why they want more money is a bit more emotional than just that…
Ultimately, it all comes down to gaining freedom.
The freedom to do stuff on their own terms.
Have the ability to support their family without the stress of a boss who only cares about looking after their own ass …
But the problem lies in the fact, they need more targeted traffic to their websites.
But despite the fact that targeted traffic is so important, a lot of business owners struggle when it comes to increasing online traffic.
As a result.
When they log into Google Analytics they often see traffic stats like this:
And, I probably don’t need to tell you that without attracting visitors to your business you are going to struggle.
No visitors, no customers.
No customers, no sales.
No sales, no business.
Here’s the deal:
The websites I currently manage are generating on average over 450,000 unique monthly visitors and 20% of that comes from AFFILIATES.
However, in my seven years working in online marketing a great deal of my time has been spent justifying the fact that affiliates should be included in plans to increase sales.
There appears to be a widespread feeling that affiliate marketing is bad for your business.
Which creates a problem:
Business owners become scared to use it.
However, they are more than willing to undertake the shiny new marketing tactics.
I often hear of business owners saying I boost my posts on Facebook to get more traffic.
I tried PPC but it didn’t work.
I post regularly on Social Media.
If this sounds familiar.
You like many others have a problem…
Why is this a problem?
Because you have to spend money or time upfront to try and get a return on your investment.
And if you are not an expert this is dangerous because you could end up flushing a lot of money down the toilet.
Just take a PPC campaign which goes out of control and you spend hundreds on adverts with no sales.
I call this Speculative Marketing.
What is Speculative Marketing, you ask?
Speculative Marketing is:
Time or Money spent to market your product to new customers with no guarantee of a sale and is undertaken with no clear goals, analysis and ROI can vary considerably.
Now compare this to Affiliate Marketing:
Where a marketing cost is only incurred when a sale has been processed.
In other words, a rock solid marketing strategy that you can build a business on.
And when you stop running speculative marketing campaigns and take control, everything changes…
Leading up to Christmas in 2013 Denis launched his website in the travel niche targeting US customers.
On paper, this site should have been a great success straight off the bat.
After all, the owner has been working with websites and in tech for over 10 years.
So he wasn’t completely new to the online world.
But he really struggled.
In 2014 the website received 2098 orders.
Not bad if you are selling high-end products but his average order value was $109.91 with an average profit margin of 13%.
This obviously poses a problem:
He needs to advertise his website and remain profitable making just $14.29 per order.
What I didn’t tell you was that only 26% of traffic came from Organic Search traffic the rest was Denis paid for.
In fact, after management costs, staff costs and budget spent on marketing Denis only just broke even in 2014.
Worst of all:
In 2014 I was constantly begging him to try affiliate marketing.
For that reason.
At the start of 2015, I forced his hand and I set up a program for him.
That meant he couldn’t use everyone’s favourite excuse “I don’t have enough time”.
I gave him 2 months to start using it.
Otherwise, I would quit helping him.
Fast forward a year and everything in Denis life and business has changed.
Now, instead of that sinking feeling in his stomach that he used to get trying to pay all the bills associated with running his business.
When he logs into his CMS, he gets jitters.
Because orders have become a lot easier to come by.
In 2015 he made 5585 orders.
That is a 166% YOY increase in total orders.
Here’s the best part:
988 of those orders were attributed to the new affiliate program.
So, now he doesn’t have to run so many speculative marketing campaigns, he only pays a marketing cost when a sale is confirmed.
This has turned his website into a highly profitable business.
Whether you own an e-commerce site like Denis, run a PR agency, sell services, you need targeted traffic that brings in sales.
Put simply, If you haven’t already you need to consider affiliate marketing.
It provides you with targeted traffic that converts into sales.
Before we dive into the step-by-step Affiliate marketing strategies, it’s important to understand the basics of affiliate marketing.
And, today I want to dive deep into what affiliate marketing actually is and how you can get started.
So, let’s dive into the fundamentals of affiliate marketing.
You wake up in the morning, open up your laptop and BOOM…
£3,459 in sales since you went to sleep!
That’s the dream, right?
Make money while you sleep.
The idea behind it is that you get other people to promote your products, often through an affiliate network, earning a commission if people actually end up buying, thanks to their marketing.
Of course, this can also work the other way around and you can also make money promoting someone else’s products.
The principle of affiliate marketing is revenue sharing.
If you have a product and want to sell more, enlist the help of others to promote your product and offer an incentive in exchange.
Here is an overview of how affiliate marketing works:
However, I believe AFFILIATE MARKETING goes a lot deeper than simply sharing revenue.
I believe in some way or another Affiliate Marketing is entwined with almost every online marketing tactic you can think of.
For example, later in this article, I am about to show you how you can carry out link building.
Instead of link building for SEO, we will be affiliate link building.
Using similar strategies you can use link building for SEO.
I will show you how to use affiliate link building to attract more affiliates for your business and increase website traffic.
Using these strategies in this manner means you will have much greater success ratio than link building for SEO and the impact on your bottom line is INSTANT.
No longer do you have to wait months for SEO to kick…
…by using affiliate link building you will see results immediately.
Affiliate marketing is when online publishers (affiliates) send visitors to a website and the Merchant (buisness owner) pays them a commission for a confirmed action.
Rather than you having to pay for traffic, you pay the online publisher (affiliate) a commission for any conversions from the traffic they have sent.
This is not limited to a sale and can also be for a signup, registration or whatever you want to offer a commission for.
Affiliate marketing works well for both people with websites and their own products and for website owners without their own products.
It allows website owners without their own website to earn revenue from their websites and it gives merchants (website owners) accessibility to get their products in front of new audiences.
Affiliate marketing programs typically work by having a merchant handle which does all the hard work automatically by tracking sales, awarding commissions and providing reporting capabilities.
All of this helps both the merchants (businesses selling products) and affiliates (people promoting the products) analyse the success of their campaigns and profits to determine which products or services are performing best.
I have made a list below of some affiliate programs to help you get started but there is a much longer list of potential programs you can sign up for.
The key here is finding the best program for your business needs.
Amazon – Choose from over a million products to advertise to your customers. Whether you are a large network, content site or blogger, we have simple linking tools to meet your advertising needs and help you monetise your website.
Commission Junction – Whether it’s monetising website traffic, driving more sales or finding more customers, we understand that our clients’ goals are our goals. There are also self-managed programs and software you can use to manage your own network of affiliates.
Affiliate marketing is when online publishers (affiliates) send visitors to a website and the Merchant (buisness owner) pays them a commission for a confirmed action.
The principle is still the same it just requires a bit more management by yourself but could be useful if you just want to run a one-off promotion or only need a handful of affiliates.
If you’ve used any of these programs or think one should be added, I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
To put it simply:
It provides you with a marketing channel which has a very high ROI.
Affiliate marketing has grown substantially over the last couple of years because more and more business owners are beginning to realise it is the most efficient way to handle online advertising.
It is extremely flexible and provides numerous benefits that you won’t get with any other ad program, they include:
1. Low Entry Price – Building or joining an affiliate program is cheap if not almost free to set up. Most online ads or strategies have an attached starting cost, with no guarantee of a sale.
2. Save money without a sales staff – An affiliate program allows you to easily market your product to a wider audience which means you may not need to employ as many people to market your service if you have a limited budget. You’ll save money that could otherwise help get your business going in other ways.
3. Only Pay when the ads work – The reason why everyone should be using affiliate marketing is because, you will never pay for an advert or marketing piece that doesn’t bring in any sales because your affiliates only make money when they deliver quality traffic which converts into a sale for you.
4. Extra Traffic for free – Through the reach of your affiliates, you will be able to attract new visitors and more traffic to your website at no extra cost. Even if not all of this traffic converts into a sale straight away you can acquire their email addresses which increases another asset of your company your email list.
5. You are in control – The affiliate program is completely managed by yourself and you set the terms. You can change the commissions, run promotions, run competitions to encourage more sales or do the opposite stop a type of advertising, stop certain affiliates joining your program. It is completely up to you how you run it.
6. It just works – Your affiliate program has one final added benefit, once it is set up if you want you don’t have to do anything but recruit new affiliates and wait for the sales to start coming in. The software will provide your banner, text, and other ads to affiliates, and it will automatically record successful sales. You can even have it compile the commissions into invoices. All you have to do is send your affiliates their payment and the system will keep running indefinitely.
What are you waiting for?
Get started with affiliate marketing today…
If I still have to convince you that affiliate marketing is a strategy worth pursuing for your business then how about I show you some examples of companies who have built multi-million businesses out of affiliate marketing.
It might just open your eyes to how big it is yet all the spotlight seems to go on SEO and Social Media.
So, if you have a product and want to sell more of it consider the type of websites you would like promoting it.
MyVoucherCodes help their customers save money shopping online by providing them with the latest voucher codes, discount codes and discount vouchers which are updated daily.
They earn a commission everytime one of their website visitors clicks on one of their links to a store with a discount code and completes a purchase.
KAYAK searches hundreds of other travel sites at once to find the information you need to make the right decisions on flights, hotels & rental cars.
When a client clicks one of the results returned and makes a purchase they are awarded a commission. Its hard to believe isn’t it that these websites which you see adverts on TV for actually do not own their own product and are simply an affiliate.
Mirror provides readers with the latest UK and World news. Get all the big headlines, pictures, analysis, opinion and video on the stories that matter to you with the Mirror.
With the decline in newspaper purchases, newspapers have had to look for ancillary revenue and have turned to affiliate marketing as an avenue which can help them stay in business. They already have thousands of readers so why not earn commissions when they mention a company or offer to their readers.
I know I would if I was them.
Here’s my battle-tested strategies for increasing revenue for any business through affiliate marketing.
These strategies have been tried and tested over the last seven years.
Start implementing them today and get one step ahead of your competitors.
It’s no secret that traffic is the key to online success.
But there’s a catch:
Simply sending volumes of traffic to a website isn’t always going to land you sales.
In fact, I have had plenty of websites suddenly send a ton of traffic to a website I manage.
Problem is it doesn’t always convert.
The result is it does nothing for you except make your statistics look rubbish.
The key is:
To find targeted traffic opportunities and build affiliate links on these websites.
Because traffic from websites you have identified as being relevant to the product you offer will result in more higher quality traffic giving you a better chance of converting them into sales.
For one individual I was able to give them an uplift in sales of £41,574 from just one affiliate link.
Imagine your life if you found one link which brought in that much in under 12 months.
Then imagine if you found 2, 3 or even 5 of these opportunities and converted them into linking to your website.
How different could your business and life be from where it is now?
If you want to check out the case study for this click here.
OK, Let’s crack on with the strategies.
Here are my 4 strategies for finding and working with the best affiliates for your business that have helped generate over £2M in revenue.
Sounds obvious, right?
Well, apparently not…
I often get clients who sign up to an affiliate program and then their first question to me is:
Where do I get affiliates from?
Well, the first place to look is the affiliate program itself.
Let me show you how:
For this example, I will walk through the process using Webgains.
Step 1 – Navigate to the main dashboard and click on “Invite Affiliates”. (It says Beta but it’s been there for years now).
Step 2 – Carry out a search to find affiliates using a variety of filters such as language, country, preferred marketing activity and category.
Step 3 – Enter a keyword related to your product or service to find the most relevant affiliates.
Let’s say I sell dog beds and products for pets in the United Kingdom.
My search would be for a term such as “pets” and I would limit the results to just show affiliates in the United Kingdom.
Step 4 – Analyse the results and invite affiliates you would like to work with.
Just analysing the URL’s at a quick glance I can see there are some opportunities for me to find affiliates.
Have a browse through them, depending on how thorough or picky you want to be and then click to invite them and send an email.
Pro Tip: Try to engage with affiliates before sending them an invite. Invite emails can often get lost so try to build a genuine relationship with them. Make comments on their website, share their posts on Social Media and then email them starting with a compliment about their website before asking for anything in return like becoming an affiliate.
If you want to build a powerful network of affiliates in 2017 (and beyond), you need to use email outreach.
The question is:
How can you actually use this?
Without ending up in the spam folder of potential affiliates.
Let me show you how.
Step 1: Use Google to Find “Powerful Affiliates”
As the name suggests, Powerful Affiliates are people that are likely to link to you and can bring you lots of traffic and sales.
I’ll show you a bunch of advanced techniques for finding Powerful Affiliates in Chapter 6.
But for now, let’s use a simple strategy to identify them: Using our trusted friend – Google.
First, search for your target keyword in Google.
Straight away you will know the websites on the first page are going to be receiving targeted traffic for your main keyword.
The best part?
You instantly know, they could be perfect candidates to become one of your Powerful Affiliates!
This is a very simple and easy process.
Yes, it might be a little time consuming but when you consider that you could find a number of affiliates who consistently send you tons of targeted traffic that converts into sales it is time well spent.
Let’s dive in with an example.
First, search for a keyword that customers may use to find your website or information about the product they are looking for.
For example, keeping with the dog bed theme one of my searches could be for “dog bed reviews”.
Look at the set of results below:
4 websites which look like perfect opportunities to become affiliates.
Let’s click on www.thoroughlyreviewed.com result to analyse the page.
At first glance, this looks perfect.
But, upon a closer look, it appears that they are already promoting Amazon products through an affiliate link.
This is great if you are a retailer and sell your products on Amazon because you could suggest your products to be added to their page.
However, if you are not signed up with Amazon and only selling through your website this opportunity is a bit more difficult to convert into a new affiliate.
As a result at the minimum, you would need to offer this website more commission to get them to add a link to your website.
Then the affiliate might consider adding your link.
Alternatively, you could offer to write new articles/content about your products with your affiliate links.
Unfortunately, you might still not get a mention on this high traffic page but it will still drive some extra traffic and sales through this website.
If you want to find ways of attracting and convincing affiliates to promote your website possibly over another website carry on reading because I will cover some cool tactics later in the article.
Once you’ve finished with one keyword, move onto another keyword.
Something like “best dog beds”.
That will bring up a whole new set of potential affiliates.
Continue with your search and make a note of all the websites that you uncover.
Step 2: Find their email address
Now that you’ve found a potential affiliate, it’s time to look for their direct email address.
The reason for this is:
Using the contact form should be your last resort.
So many emails get lost in there for a number of reasons so you want to find and email direct the person in charge who will get the maximum benefit from working with you as an affiliate.
Let’s see how:
Personally, I would use Hunter.io but there are plenty of solutions available to you now.
Simply enter a site into Hunter.io…
…and it’ll supply you with a list of email addresses it found associated with that domain.
If you don’t find anything try searching again using a different tool.
Step 3: Send a personalised email
They key here is personalised.
You don’t want to send the same script to everyone.
So, here’s an example of the type of email you could put together for your outreach:
Hi [First Name],
I was looking for content on [Topic] today, because I run a [Niche] business.
[Compliment about their website] or [Comment on recent Social Media post] (anything personalised to make them feel good).
I just wanted to let you know I sell [Product] – [URL].
And as someone that has a website about [Topic], I thought you might be interested in earning extra revenue from your website.
If you accept I would love the opportunity to discuss any possibilities of collaborating together.
Either way, keep up the awesome work with [Website]!
Step 4: Reverse Engineers Google’s Top 10
What better place to look for affiliates than people who already link to the first set of websites you found.
If a website links to one of your potential “Powerful Affiliates” it is likely they would be motivated to add an affiliate link to your website.
This can reveal a ton of potential affiliates who may not be ranking for the particular keywords you searched for but still could provide you with extra sales and FREE traffic.
And because they already link out to content in your industry, they make awesome prospects to become an affiliate.
Let me walk you through this process step by step to show you.
First, grab one of the URL’s of the first set of potential affiliates you found and pop it into a link analysis tool (I’m using Ahrefs in this example).
Next, hit “backlinks” in the sidebar:
Then analyse at the websites which link to that site.
In the image below we can see 9 backlinks from unique domains so I will take a closer look at each domain.
If you find any quality niche-related sites that could be affiliates just add them to your list.
Remember: finding the affiliates does take a bit of effort. But because it’s the foundation of today’s lesson and future sales for your business, it’s well worth it.
And once you have a list of potential affiliates ready to go, you’re set.
A huge chunk of the hard work is over.
So there are a few ways to get other peoples’ customers, but the first, the best, the easiest, and the fastest way is through affiliate marketing proposals.
This is one of my favourite marketing tricks that has stood the test of time.
How is that possible, you ask?
Through a link analysis tool and a bit of hard work.
You can even do it by using just free tools!
Let me show you how.
Step 1: Make A List of Your Top Competitors
The first thing you need to do is gather a list of your top competitors who offer the same or similar products to you.
For example, if you ran the dog beds e-commerce site I mentioned earlier, you’d search for something like, “dog beds” to find your top competitors.
Make a note of each one in a spreadsheet.
Step 2 – Uncover Your Competitor Backlinks
The next step is to grab each of your competitors URL’s and enter it into a backlink analysis tool.
This will uncover potential affiliates
If someone links to your competitor, they’re likely to link to you…right?
So, let’s take a look at the top result from my search in Step 1: www.petsathome.com.
First of all, we want to find the sites that link to www.petsathome.com?
Start by opening a link analysis tool such as Ahrefs.
Enter the competitors URL.
And this nifty tool will show you who links to your competitor.
Using the above strategy I can see there are a total of 24 domains linking to www.petsathome.com.
Next, click on one of the backlinks and check out the website and page you land on.
The sites listed here are all potential affiliates.
Now, you need to decide if you think they would be great to add to your list of powerful affiliates.
First of all, you need to decide if it is even possible to get an affiliate link on this page.
For example, a large corporation or news website may be too difficult to find someone to add or link or convince to become your affiliate.
Whereas a website owned by an individual is far more likely to become your affiliate.
Next, search for the link you just uncovered in the previous step to check if it still makes sense to add a link to your product, then click the link.
Why click on it, you ask?
Because you want to check to see if you notice any tracking in the URL which might suggest they already promote this website as an affiliate.
Taking the example I showed you earlier if I click on any of the links on that page I can see clearly they are an Amazon affiliate from the URL because they have a tag associated with the link with the name of their website.
If that is the case and they do, you may need to go about your outreach in a slightly different manner.
You could try offering more commission or go about building a relationship in advance before asking if there is a chance they might also promote your products.
Here is another website I found with a link on to one of my potential competitors.
At the bottom of their page I can see the link to my competitor but when I follow the link there is no affiliate tracking code.
That means this website is prime candidate to become a new affiliate.
Finally, once you have found a website like the example above it’s time to email them.
Send them an email similar to the script I showed you earlier asking them if their is the potential to add a link to promote your website in exchange for a small commission from any sales they send your way.
So there you have it – competitor backlink analysis is one of my favourite tactics that has stood the test of time for increasing traffic and sales for any business.
It is so easy that anyone in your business can do this.
No need to learn a complicated system or strategy, it’s perfect for anyone to get massive results from.
The end result will be that you have ethically stolen a large number of links and traffic from your top competitors.
Who knew that increasing traffic and sales, was so easy?
Let me start this with a quote which hopefully will make a bit more sense in a minute…
“Earth’s mightiest heroes must come together and learn to fight as a team if they are to succeed”
This quote was used to describe The Avengers Movie on their quest whereas individuals they are good but not nearly as strong of a force as they are as a team.
You might think, how does this relate to my business?
Well, It’s a VERY powerful concept and strategy that is known by many marketers but used by few.
And if you are serious about growing your business having a team behind your business promoting it will lead to much greater success than struggling by on your own.
Therefore, I’m going to show you a strategy known as The Dream 100…
And exactly how you can implement it in your business for rapid growth.
Ok, so the premise of The Dream 100 is to build a list of influencers in your niche (e.g. list owners, bloggers, vloggers, podcasters, social media influencers) who already have access to your target customers as their fans or in their database…
The secret is to:
Who if they promoted your business would straight away make a MASSIVE difference to your traffic and sales.
For me, in the Internet Marketing niche if Neil Patel was to turn around and promote my website.
It would just explode…
The first step is to identify who your influencers are.
You might already have some in mind.
Start to make a list or spreadsheet with their name, website, social media profiles so that you can be systematic in your approach.
Then, start building relationships with them.
This is vital, nobody likes promoting a total stranger but if you become their friend the influencer is much more likely to help you out.
Let me illustrate this with my example of running a dog bed business.
First, we would identify the potential markets our influencers could be in.
Markets could include:
After you have a list of markets you then need to identify potential influencers within the markets you have identified.
Create a large list of all the list owners in the market
Try to make a list of at least 100 people in each of these different markets.
Running an “affiliate program” requires you to do a lot of so-called “outreach.”
To implement the above strategies successfully you will need to reach out to let potential affiliates know about your product, ask for a backlink as an affiliate or simply start to make a connection.
But there’s a way you can do this without getting your email DELETED.
Now that you have a LARGE list of potential “Powerful Affiliates” made up from your research and Dream 100 you need to reach out to them.
But here’s the deal.
Because there is no quicker way to grow your business than having Powerful Affiliates promote your business…
It needs to be done RIGHT!
And coming straight out with it and asking to be promoted.
Could just get you BLACKLISTED forever.
And you don’t want that, right?
Of course not.
So the key to affiliate outreach is to be GENUINE, give first, then again and again without expecting anything in return.
In fact, this is actually how you win friends and influence people 🙂
Therefore, take your list of powerful affiliates and start trying to make a genuine INTERACTION with all of them.
Start by providing insightful comments on their blog posts, reply to tweets, and find ways you can provide value to them before asking for anything in return.
If you really want to GET NOTICED.
Try this little trick I learnt from Russell Brunson and send your Powerful Affiliates a gift in the post.
Someone is much more likely to open a gift in the post and pay attention to who sent it compared to a blog comment.
Be as creative as possible with this….
Create a story behind the gift or send a few and each time tell them to expect something else in the post which keeps them waiting for the gift creating a bond with you and them.
If you are thinking “I can’t afford to do that”.
Think of it this way.
If one of your Powerful Affiliates was to promote your product how many sales could it bring in?
Hundreds, Thousands or maybe Millions…. so is it worth budgeting 1% of this to try and get an influencer to promote your product.
So is it worth budgeting 1% of this to try and get a minimum of one powerful affiliate to promote your product?
Of course, it is, it could skyrocket your business overnight!
Now you might be still wondering how does this all link in with Affiliate Marketing?
Well once you have either built a relationship, the influencer is happy responding to you or if you have grabbed their attention in another way it is time to ask for help.
And, when you do this you can also offer them a little incentive for promoting your product by making them an affiliate.
For example, as I am writing this I received this email from Jeff Bullas.
At first, it just looks like a normal email to all of his subscribers.
However, he is actually promoting a product for Ted McGrath as an affiliate.
This is happening more and more as people start to realise they can make money from their database of subscribers or fan bases promoting other people’s products…
It makes sense.
What are you waiting for?
It might be hard work, but I’m sure you can see the enormous untapped potential of affiliate outreach.
By setting aside a few minutes of your day to drop comments on some of the right blogs (or send emails to some of the right people ), you’ll instantly separate yourself from your competitors.
I know because I have seen it happen…
Because you won’t be a single voice struggling to break even – you’ll be enlisting the help of the biggest players in your niche.
Suddenly you’ll be the business that arrived from the wilderness.
And when people ask you how you did it, you don’t have to spill the beans.
This is our little secret…
Pro tip: Send Emails In the Afternoon
Here’s one thing I’ve learned and that is you will have better success if you send affiliate outreach emails in the afternoon.
Because when your email arrives in the box in the morning it has a higher chance of getting deleted with the other 67 emails in the powerful affiliates inbox.
Generating traffic becomes a lot easier when you have more “Powerful Affiliates” promoting your business.
Here’s a quick list of advanced strategies to ensure you have the most amount of affiliates promoting your business.
Ensure Your Affiliate Program is Very Visible
This is a nice, simple step but if you want to attract more affiliates then make it as easy as possible for them to find out about your affiliate program and to sign up.
Include a link to your affiliate program on your website.
By doing this you increase the chance that more people will notice your offer and sign up for it.
How to Run PPC to Recruit Affiliates
Secondly, you can try using paid advertising such as Google Adwords or Facebook adverts targeting potential new affiliates.
Start by targeting certain niches that you think will have access to your target customers and see if you can recruit more affiliates that way.
Do not forget to create an explanatory landing page, where you describe the advantages the affiliates get by joining your program.
Participate or Run Your Own Affiliate Event
For this, you can choose to take part in special affiliate events that are held all over the world.
The most important in the USA is Affiliate Summit, where you can find a lot of important affiliates.
These type of events give you the opportunity to meet your potential affiliates and present your program to them.
Similar to this, you can try running your own affiliate day in an attempt to recruit new affiliates.
For example, a lot of my potential new affiliates that I had identified were either based in or could get to London easily.
With my marketing program Webgains also based in London, it was easy for me to invite potential affiliates into the Webgains office for me to speak with them face to face and present our program and opportunity.
This is a very cost-effective strategy you could implement.
Use “Pre-Curated” Lists of Potential Targets
There’s no denying it:
Finding high-quality affiliates is HARD.
That’s the bad news.
The good news is that you can use someone else’s work to find potential affiliates…
…in the form of “best blog” lists.
Here’s an example:
Needless to say, if you were running the dog bed business, every single one of the youtube channels listed here would make a great affiliate.
You can find lists like these using search strings like: “best [topic] websites” or “list of [topic] websites”.
Get Easy Affiliates With Link Reclamation
Whenever someone mentions a brand, be it you, your competitor, something you are selling in an article, they link to them…right?
I mean, they should link to the brand they mention. But it doesn’t always happen.
Here’s what I mean:
See how a type of shoe and the brand Nike are on this blog post with no link to purchase them.
With a gentle nudge, most site owners are happy to turn the unlinked mention into a link and become your affiliate.
How do you find these unlinked mentions?
Google search can work well, Ahrefs, SEMrush and BuzzSumo all work really well for this.
The example below shows you how you can set up an alert for any term in Ahrefs.
Increase Traffic and Sales from Broken Links
Broken Link Building has grown very popular over the last couple of years
Normally it is associated with link building for SEO but as you will see in this example you can also use it to find affiliates.
It is also a lot easier to convince a webmaster to add your affiliate link through this strategy
Because instead of having to convince them to add a link, with Broken Link Building, you actually solve a usability issue on someone’s website.
Here’s how to do it:
Log into a link analysis tool such as Ahrefs or you can also use a Chrome browser extension.
This is how you would find broken links using Ahrefs.
Again start by entering your competitor or the website of a brand you sell into Ahrefs.
Find Pages With Broken Links
Once you have entered a URL, click on broken links in the left sidebar under the backlinks title.
This will supply you with a list of websites which have a broken link pointing to your competitor’s website.
With this strategy, you can look at a whole domain or analyse specific product pages.
Email The Webmaster About The Broken Link You Found
Finally, you need to inform the person who runs the website which you found the broken link on and suggest to them your site could be a good replacement and that they could earn a commission as your affiliate on top of that.
Here’s an example script you could use:
Subject: Broken Link on [Their Site’s Name]
Could you point me in the right direction, please?
I was searching for information on [Topic] when I came across this page: [Page Title or URL].
However, I noticed you have a link not working:
[Add text to describe where to find broken link]
Just to let you know I also offer [Product]. My website might be a good replacement for the broken link.
Also, If you wish I also have an affiliate program which you can earn a commission from any sales made from that link.
Either way, Let me know if you are interested?
Now it’s time for me to show you examples of how to increase sales from your current affiliates.
The best part?
I’ve never shared any of these publically before.
Bribe Affiliates With Free Content
This is very interesting…
When most people pitch to affiliates and ask for more coverage to drive sales, they get on their knees and beg.
Remember: when you want something, you need to add value to that person’s site.
And begging doesn’t count ?
So, instead offer them something for FREE, write an article, provide exclusive images or create a background for their website they can use exclusively.
That way you’re providing value and they don’t have to do any extra work.
Giving away free content is a great way to get more coverage from an affiliate and encourage more sales.
It also gives you the opportunity to get the type of coverage large brands pay a premium for.
Maintain a Healthy Relationship.
Most companies set up their affiliate program and then generally forget about it.
They add offers and the odd discount code, but that is it.
They will write content for the blog, run PPC adverts and manage their Social Media channels but rarely will they engage with their affiliates.
This is a big mistake.
Instead, you should try to inspire them where you can.
Send gorgeous newsletters that speak to your affiliates instead of at them.
Offer to help them with their website and grow their traffic.
Speak to affiliates regularly on the phone and make sure you are always at the forefront of their mind.
Give Gifts to Encourage Affiliates to Work Harder.
It could be a free offer of your software or products.
It could be a prize, it could be a commission kick back.
Either way, find ways you can motivate affiliates to promote you as much as possible.
Russell Brunson does this perfectly by offering to pay the instalments of a new car for you if you achieve a certain threshold of sales.
First of all, this encourages more affiliates to sign up.
Secondly, it means more affiliates are going to work that bit harder for him because they know that on top of the commission they already get they could earn themselves their dream car for FREE.
Think about that for a minute and could you do something similar?
Could you offer £1,000 back if an affiliate brought you £50,000 of sales?
Offer Attractive Commissions
Be generous and offer high motivating commissions.
Nothing is more likely to get an affiliate to promote someone else than commission.
If you can’t afford large commissions, think about running short promotions and offer your affiliates a higher commission for short periods.
For example, let’s say a new range of dog beds has been delivered and we want to push them as much as possible for the first month.
We could offer a higher commission than normal to our affiliates for that month.
Have a think and consider if you can offer affiliates a higher commission on sales for a certain product over a short period?
Have an Amazing Product
Offering just high commission is not always enough, you need to be offering a great product/service which actually attracts a lot of customers and mainly appears interesting to your affiliates.
Look for ways where you can increase the perceived value of a product offer when someone buys from you.
This also gives the affiliate a reason to promote you over your competitors if you are selling the same product.
For example, if I sold dog beds could I offer a dog toy free with any purchase.
Run Exclusive Promotions
As a general rule of thumb, any affiliate when provided with an exclusive discount code or offer will offer some extra coverage in return.
What I like to do is run a rotation system with different offers throughout the year with about 10-20 top affiliates offering each an exclusive offer to promote each month.
Make sure to bargain with them to ensure that providing an exclusive offer will result in a better position on their website or you get included in an email.
That’s All Folks…
I hope that you see the full potential of affiliate marketing as a scalable way to grow your business online.
